Blunt vs. Narrow Bone Structure
Have you ever wondered how your bone structure could help you determine your body type?
You may have heard that Naturals have a “blunt” bone structure, Dramatics have a “sharp” bone structure, and Romantics have a “rounded” bone structure. But what does that really mean? And how can you tell which one you have?
In this blog I’ll be:
⟹ Discussing the differences between Romantics, Theatrical Romantics, Soft Dramatics, and Soft Naturals
⟹ Using visual examples to help you understand terms like “narrow”, “sharp”, “blunt” and “rounded”
Let’s dive into some visual examples to spot the differences.
Katy Perry (on the right) is a verified Soft Natural, characterized by a soft yang, blunt bone structure.
Selena Gomez (on the left) is a verified Theatrical Romantic, meaning she is predominantly yin (soft, rounded, small) with added sharpness or “narrowness” to her bone structure.
In other words, Katy Perry’s softness comes from both curves and a blunt bone structure, while Selena Gomez’s narrow, sharper bone structure is accentuated by curves.
By now you might be asking, “where can you see this bluntness or sharpness?” In actuality, Kibbe’s Image ID system doesn’t have a formula. There’s no body part I can point to and tell you to look there to differentiate between a sharp or blunt bone structure. His system looks at the body as a whole.
However, there are a few spots on the body that can clue us in to our baseline bone structure.
⟹ Shoulders: When comparing Selena's shoulders to Katy's, you'll notice a very narrow, bird-like quality to Selena's bones. On the other hand, Katy's shoulders are a bit "denser," "wider," or less narrow.
⟹ Wrist: Similar to her shoulders, Selena's wrists appear very narrow and sleek. Katy's wrists, again, are a bit "denser," "wider," or less narrow.
⟹ Face: Selena Gomez has a pointed chin and narrow, cat-like eyes, though her overall face is very rounded and soft. This reflects the sharp yang elements atop her otherwise soft features. Katy Perry's face, in contrast, has significantly less sharpness. Her chin is slightly flatter, and her eyes are more rounded, giving her face a blunter appearance.
⟹ Ribcage: Katy Perry's rib cage appears slightly "wider" than Selena's. Because your body's flesh follows the shape of your ribcage, I believe it’s a good indicator of width or bluntness. Women with wider frames tend to have noticeably "wider" ribcages than those without.
Women without width, even if they have curves, tend to have an overall narrow bone structure.
For example, in the photo on the right, Selena Gomez, despite her curves, has a notably narrow bone structure in her torso compared to the rest of her frame, with her curves overlaying her narrow structure.
On the other hand, Katy Perry, who also has curves, has a slightly "wider" rib cage. Consequently, her curves also take on a somewhat "wider" or more “frame dominant” appearance.
At this point you might be thinking, "it’s easy to distinguish between a Soft Natural and a Theatrical Romantic because Theatrical Romantics have a narrower frame.”
But how can you differentiate between a Soft Natural and a Romantic? Or how about a Soft Natural and a Soft Dramatic?
Let’s explore some more visual examples.
