Soft Gamine vs. Theatrical Romantic

Sometimes I mistake Lucy Hale for Selena Gomez because they look so similar - yet Selena is a Theatrical Romantic and Lucy is a Soft Gamine.

How?

These two types are pretty similar, but there’s one key difference.

They’re both

  • compact, petite, delicate

  • have short vertical line

  • both have Yin as a dominating feature

  • both can have hourglass shape

  • the recommendations about outfits are similar in many ways,

The key difference though, is how much yin they have.

Theatrical romantics are going to be primarily Yin with a touch of yang,

Soft gamines are going to be pretty 50/50 yin/yang but not balanced. They’re going to have either yin or yang features in about equal amounts - and because they’re soft gamines, they’ll have a touch of extra yin.

50/50 yin/yang could mean short torso and long legs or long torso/short legs.

Also, and this is from David Kibbe’s book,

“Soft gamines will have more pronounced curves. Hands and feet are fleshier. Bone structure is slightly wider. Eyes are big and round, lips are very full and cheeks are ‘apple-shaped.’ Theatrical Romantics [have a] smaller body [and] narrower curves. Hands and feet are narrower, more ‘birdlike.’ Bone structure is narrower. Eyes are round but slanted at the edge. Lips are round but less full. Cheekbones are more pronounced.”

Now look at Lucy Hale and Selena Gomez side by side.

That combo yin/yang really fits Lucy Hale’s body if you look at how her bone structure  a bit “stronger” than Selena’s but not as strong as a natural type.

If you look at her wrists and ankles, they look wider (or a bit more yang) than Selena’s which makes sense because Theatrical Romantics are primarily yin types (very soft and delicate).

Lucy Hale also has a straighter figure than Selena.

Lucy Hale’s shoulders are a bit wider and more defined by her frame - but then juxtaposed with her really short frame.

On the other hand, Selena’s frame looks a lot more delicate and narrow. Her shoulders are also a bit more defined by her flesh.

And Soft Gamine really makes sense because she doesn’t look overly childish in very animated detail.

She can also pull off more angularity and color blocking than a Theatrical Romantic would be able to because she has more yang in her body overall.

I hope that helps!
